Sheriff talks on scams at Lions
KINGFISHER COUNTY Sheriff Dennis Banther, right, and Lt. David Smith were the guest speakers of the Kingfisher Lions Club last week. Smith told of current scams going on across the nation involving telephone scammers masquerading as Internal Revenue Service employees attempting to get senior citizens to reveal personal banking information to receive IRS refund checks. He also warned to not respond to social media surveys, which appear innocent, but attempt to have respondents record vital personal information that can lead to financial accounts being hacked. He also warned of oil and gas royalty fraud phone solicitations that have been documented at the sheriff’s office. Banther told of progress on the new $12 million Kingfisher County Criminal Justice Center being built south of the city. He said there had been holdups regarding water and gas line issues, but he hoped inmates could be moved into the new jail by sometime in April. He said overcrowding in the current jail has been a serious and ongoing problem for many years. [KT&FP Staff Photo]
