Silver Spade winner a work of art

Working in yard, garden serves multiple purposes for Jones

Jackie Jones’ “artistic endeavor” was recognized by the Kingfisher Lions Club as the winning yard for the June Silver Spade Award.

For Jones, gardening serves as a hobby, passion, creative outlet and form of exercise.

“Each year I get to paint a new picture,” said Jones.

Jones, a retired school teacher, said she has loved gardening for as long as she can remember.

“This would be a burden for people who don’t like to garden,” said Jones.

She said it is not a burden for her, however.

Jones has begun planting more perennials, resulting in year-round landscaping.

“In the summer, I want more color,” she said.

She said she adds color through an assortment of flowers, and her favorite are the red begonias.

“I love the pop of red they add and I plant them almost every year,” said Jones.

Jones has also planted sunpatiens, day lilies, balloon flowers and rose moss.

Near her mailbox, Jones has planted blue salvia, which she said the bees and butterflies love.

Throughout the yard and garden there are also several bushes, shrubs and trees such as crepe myrtles, magnolia bushes, boxwood shrubs and a Bradford pear.
