Sisk kicks game winner as 7th grade Yellowjackets earn first football win
Jake Sisk played the role of hero Thursday for the Kingfisher seventh grade football team.
Sisk kicked a 21-yard field goal with five seconds remaining on his home field to lift the Jackets to a 9-6 victory over Perkins-Tryon.
It was the first win of the season for the seventh grade team, which was playing its fifth game of the year.
“It was a really hard-fought game,” coach Doug Jech said. “We showed improvement and determination to pull out this first win.
The game-winning kick was set up by a 25-yard pass from Paytun Burnham to Will Mercer.
The game was tied at halftime and at the end of the third quarter.
Kingfisher’s TD was a 3-yard run by Burnham.
Luke Strickland, who caught a 20-yard pass in the game, also had a fumble recovery while Mercer picked off a Demon pass for KMS.
Jech said other standouts in the game were Maddox Jarvis, Ryker Long and Daniel Guerrero on defense.
He added Mason Alig, Landon Rempe and Bert Haag were solid on the offensive side of the ball.
Kingfisher’s eighth grade didn’t fare as well against a loaded Perkins-Tryon squad in a 48-14 defeat.
“That’s probably one of the best eighth grade teams I’ve ever seen,” Jech said of the Demons. “They’re big, fast and skilled.”
Among the Demons’ players is Eric Stevenson, the son of former Kingfisher and Crescent standout Eric “Woody” Stevenson, who went on to a solid career at Oklahoma State.
Kingfisher’s first TD was a 42-yard pass from Cade Covalt to Jake Reagan.
Covalt later added a 62-yard scoring run.
Eli Johnson kicked both PATs for the Jackets.
The junior high teams return to the field Oct. 14 against Weatherford.
