SO investigates second shooting death in 3 weeks
A 30-year-old Hennessey man was shot and killed Saturday while allegedly breaking into a neighbor’s house, Kingfisher County Sheriff Dennis Banther said.
Daniel Verdoza-Velasco, 12454 E. 634 Road, Hennessey, was declared dead by Life EMS shortly after noon on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s report.
His body was found on the porch of a neighboring residence at 12590 E. 634 Road, about 4.5 miles west of U.S. 81, by officers responding to a 911 call reporting an intruder was shot during an attempted break-in.
The homeowner, Christopher Paul Harris, 43, allegedly shot Verdoza-Velasco twice in the chest and once in the head with a 9-millimeter handgun about 11:45 a.m. Saturday allegedly while Verdoza-Velasco was attempting to enter the house through a window. Harris then called 911, Banther said.
Banther provided the following summary of witness statements collected so far:
“The victim arrived at the location agitated, making little sense and ran into the tree line. A friend [who] was with him also exited the vehicle and exhibited behaviors that led the homeowner to tell him to leave his property immediately. The friend left.
“Soon after, the victim came from the tree line and kept coming towards the homeowner, leading [the homeowner] to believe something wasn’t right, so the homeowner went back into his residence.
“The victim then began trying to break into the residence where the homeowner shot him and called 911.”
Because the closest sheriff’s deputy was four miles east of Okarche when the call came in, assistance was requested from the Hennessey Police Department and Officer Christian Solis was first on the scene, Banther said.
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was called in to process the crime scene, but Banther said his office is conducting the investigation.
The body of Verdoza-Velasco was removed by the state medical examiner’s office, Banther said.
Harris was not arrested and Banther said his office will submit its reports to the district attorney’s office once the investigation is completed for a determination as to whether criminal charges are warranted.
The fatal shooting was the second in three weeks in the Hennessey area.
The first involved a man who was shot and killed May 9 in an alter-cation in the road outside a birthday party in rural Hennessey which was followed by a high-speed car chase and single-vehicle rollover accident.
Banther said the investigation into the earlier incident was completed after multiple witness interviews and his office would be turning in a more than 60-page report to the DA’s office this week for consideration of possible charges.
