KHS boys, Lomega girls ranked #1 in season’s first basketball polls; several other county teams near top

By

The first rankings of the basketball season were released Monday and two county teams sit atop their respective classes and several more are very near the top.

Kingfisher is No. 1 in Class 4A boys and Lomega is the top Class B girls team according to the polls released on ossaarankings.com.

The rankings are tabulated and released each week after a vote by coaches in their respective classes.

Lomega is the defending state champ and returns every starter from last year’s team.

The Lady Raiders are 2-0, but haven’t played since Nov. 10. They’ve had three games canceled or postponed and aren’t scheduled to play again until next week in the Canton Invitational.

Lomega received 50 first-place votes. Varnum, last year’s runner-up, is ranked second and had 10 first-place votes.

The remainder of the top-five includes, in order, Leedey, Hammon and Lookeba-Sickles.

Okarche’s girls pulled down the No. 4 ranking in Class A. The Lady Warriors, under first-year head coach Haley Mitchel, beat Preston on Nov. 6, but haven’t played since.

Five games have currently been postponed as Okarche remains in distance learning this week.

Defending state champ Hydro-Eakly is No. 1 while Vanoss is second and Cheyenne-Reydon third.

Cashion’s girls are ranked eighth in Class 2A. They’re set to open their season Thursday at home against Stroud.

Kingfisher’s Lady Jackets opened their season Tuesday (after press time) as the 11th-ranked team in Class 4A.

As expected, the KHS boys opened at No. 1.

KHS got 39 first-place votes. Heritage Hall is ranked second and received four first-place votes.

Holland Hall, ranked fifth, received one firstplace vote.

The Jackets were ranked No. 1 the entirety of last season and won their first 25 games before being upset by Bethany in the area final.

KHS won the next night against Metro Christian to advance to state for the fourth consecutive year.

That state tournament was eventually canceled, but the Jackets return all five starters from the team that would have taken the court.

Two county teams are among the top-eight in Class 2A.

Cashion, which qualified for state for the first time since 1995 last year, is ranked third. Like the CHS girls, the Wildcats open their season Thursday against Stroud.

Hennessey drops down from 3A and is currently ranked eighth. The last time the Eagles were in 2A, they advanced to the state title game in 2019.

Hennessey opened its season Tuesday (after press time) at home against Fairview.

The Okarche boys, like the girls, are 1-0. They opened at No. 15 in the initial Class A rankings.

Lomega’s boys are among the favorites to contend in Class B.

Just one win shy of state a year ago, the Raiders are No. 3 this week. They are currently 3-0.
