Heavy rains fell across portions of Kingfisher County Sunday, ranging from 1 inch at Loyal to up to 5 inches in eastern Kingfisher County.

The rain fell just in time for small grain planting.

Monday marked the first day of autumn, the time when many farmers begin sowing small grain crops.

Kingfisher Weather Observer Steve Loftis reported a total of 3 inches of rain over the weekend, falling as follows: Saturday .05 inch, Sunday 2.5 inches, Monday .25 inch and Tuesday .2 inch.

The rain brought September’s total to 2.94 inches and the year-to-date total to 42.99 inches. The local average yearly rainfall is 35.65 inches.

Rainfall amounts recorded across the area included:

Hennessey – 1.16 inches at the Harold Ebers residence, which was called just the right amount for some early-sown wheat that was just coming up.

Kingfisher – 2.37 inches at the Mesonet site on the Mueggenborg Farm west of Kingfisher, 3.0 inches at an unofficial gauge, 3.1 inches at the Mike Reid residence southwest of Kingfisher.

Loyal – one inch at the Jon Cochran Sr. residence.
