Talent on display at FIRST Lego League expo
Local schools’ robotics teams solve ‘problems’ during competition at Okarche
Nearly 20 teams, including several from Kingfi sher County, put their skills to the test Nov. 2 in the FIRST Lego League and FIRST Lego League Junior competitions.
They were held at the Okarche High School gym.
As part of the Lego Leagues, students are given real-world scientifi c topics and asked to solve a problem.
They conduct research, build motorized Lego models to demonstrate the solution and compete in the regional expo.
This year’s themes were “Boomtown Build” and “City Shaper.”
Devon Energy sponsored the teams by providing all materials and training teachers to serve as coaches.
The competition prompted Kingfisher to form a Robotics Club at Heritage School.
Fourth grade teacher Melody Kuehn and third grade teacher Kaytlyn Woods served as coaches for the teams.
“We have been holding two-hour practices after school on Mondays since the beginning of September,” said Kuehn of the preparation for the competition.
Students learned about computer coding, what it takes to develop a new building and working as a team, Kuehn said.
“They came up with their own building designs with moving parts and lights, a presentation and a ‘Show Me’ poster,” Kuehn said. “They spent about four weeks learning about buildings and coding the moving parts and four weeks building and preparing their boards and presentations.”
The FIRST program had a set of lessons about all the parts of the building structures including making them durable, accessible and eco-friendly.
Teams had to build a structure with at least one moving part.
“Both of our teams had two moving parts and lights,” Kuehn said.
Kingfisher sent two teams: Building Addiction and Kingfi sher Coders.
Building Addiction won the Innovative Poster Award. Team members include Finley Harrison, Rystan Jerkins, William Dudzinski, Kyson Odell, Will Finley, Maddux Gomez, Carson Swafford and Logan Langdon.
Kingfisher Coders won the Innovative Explorers Award. Team members are Jackson Garrett, Savanna Rae Havens, Kevyn Aguinaga, Baron Bollenbach, Brystel Stitt, Lucas Jackson, Hagen Owens and Kenzi Thiessen.
Teams from Okarche elementary and middle schools as well as Lomega’s elementary also took part.
Bomb Diggity from Okarche won the Model and Design Award.
Team members, coached by Kaci Short, were fourth graders Cooper Anderson and Grady Krittenbrink, second graders Sutton Terrell, Avery Treece and Ella Anderson and fi rst grader Will Krittenbrink.
The Littenators were coached by Halli Ford and won the Explore and Discover Award.
Team members were fourth grader Hayden Wittrock, third graders Conagher Taylor, Blakeley Stephens and Elizabeth Austin and second graders Bronc Shepherd and Carson Wright.
Kendra Stephens coached the Wolf Pack Warriors and they won the Creative Show Award.
Fourth graders Zara Mc-Daniel and Tenley Ludwig, third graders Hartli Ford and Merrick Sellers and second graders Harper Geheb and Jag Mueggenborg were the team members.
The Raider Rangers from Lomega were coached by Kristy Waters and Lani Espy.
Members were Garrett Hladik, Lester Yost, Ian Pope, Wyatt Kannon, Kollins Banister and Olivia Landreth.
The Raider Rangers won the Boomtown Build Creative Programming Award.
Tangi Smith, community relations specialist at Devon, said the company supports innovative programs which inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.
“The competitions engaged students in hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experiences while building confidence and developing positive learning habits,” Smith said.
“Devon wants to foster children’s ingenuity by giving them the opportunity to explore, create, test and share ideas. We were excited to see the competition nearly double in its second year and witness these kids’ incredible imaginations.”
The junior league is for ages 6-10 and the other for ages 9-14.
Other schools participating included Calumet Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary in El Reno, Hinton elementary and middle schools, Maple Elementary, and Weatherford elementary and middle schools.
There is another competition this weekend in Mustang.
