Track to undergo 1st major repairs since installment

By

Although the money won’t be officially allocated until next month, the Kingfisher Board of Education told Superintendent Jason Sternberger to move forward with a project to repair the district’s track at the walking complex.

Sternberger first approached the board about potential repairs in June and gathered more information to present to board members at last Monday’s regular August meeting.

Repairs will include:

• Patching the existing track surface as needed;

• Sealing the edge of the surface between the rubber and the concrete curb;

• Applying a sealer layer over entire track surface;

• Applying a 5 mm impermeable polyurethane flood and chip layer with red EPDM rubber; and,

• Striping the track.

The project will cost about $251,000 and will be the first major repair since the track was installed in 2007.

The track was installed by ATG Sports, which sold the maintenance and repair part of its business to McConnell and Associates, which will handle the repairs.

“We felt now is the time to make these repairs,” Sternberger said.

“When we had it inspected, they said the track was showing signs of damage getting into the base mat. Once the damages get to that point, the cost would be much higher. There would be a lot more labor involved to tear and the base mat, plus the cost to replace that and the surface.”

Sternberger will include the purchase order among next month’s financials for the board to approve.

McConnell and Associates said they could begin the project in the fall and it would take around three weeks to complete, according to Sternberger.
