Train crash victim out of hospital

By

A local man struck by a train near Kingfisher May 28 was released from the hospital Monday, a family member reported.

Dakota Eugene Welch, 23, a former Kingfisher High School student, was struck from behind by a train as he walked along the Union Pacific tracks just south and east of the Kingfisher city limits.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, Welch was walking south alongside the railroad tracks listening to music through headphones and apparently did not hear the approaching train.

Welch was flown to OU Medical Center by Air Evac helicopter where he underwent two separate surgeries to repair a broken pelvis and fractured hand, the family member said.

Welch is scheduled to return to the hospital this week to get a hard cast on his hand once swelling goes down. He also is using a walker to avoid putting weight on his legs as his injuries continue to heal, the family member said.

Welch sustained other fractures to his skull, neck, ribs and shoulder and a number of lacerations which required staples, according to his family.

OHP Trooper Seth Wallace investigated the accident, assisted by Kingfisher police and fire departments.
