Trash plan on agenda

By

City Manager Dave Slezickey said he expects the mayor and commissioners will be on board for a plan that will finally re-open the trash transfer station on the north side of town.

Commonly referred to as “the dump,” the facility where residents had been allowed to bring oversized items or excess trash that would not fit in their polycarts has been closed since early fall when a ramp collapsed in heavy rains.

The facility remained closed over ongoing negotiations with the Department of Environmental Quality over whether it could continue to operate in the same capacity as before without being in violation of state regulations.

The final answer was no, at least not without major modifications that carried an estimated price tag of more than $3 million, Slezickey said at last month’s city meeting.

The latest proposal, which Slezickey expects to be supported by commissioners at Monday night’s meeting, will allow the site to be open three days a week as a “collection center” with several oversized rolloff containers.

If approved by commissioners, the collection center would operate from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then 3:30-6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for current city residents and those living outside city limits who have city sanitation services.

All sanitation customers would see a $2.50 monthly increase in their bills to fund the collection center, if the proposal is approved.

The collection center would be open March 12.

Slezickey said an employee will be assigned to man the site.

“We’re going to be flexible about it and see how it goes,” Slezickey said.

The monthly city meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
