Trio of Kingfisher students earn spot on JH all-state honor choir

By

Three Kingfisher students have earned a place in the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association Junior High All-State Honor Choirs.

Kingfisher High School freshmen Raechel Evans and Zaylynn Lopez and Kingfisher Middle School eighth grader Caleb Hendryx are the first Kingfisher junior high all-staters in approximately 17-20 years, according to Diann Magvocal director.

There are two rounds to the all-state auditions.

The first round divides the state into quadrants: Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and Southeast.

Kingfisher students compete with students in the Northwest quad.

All students learn three pieces of difficult choral music.

They do not know which two pieces will be auditioned until the day of auditions.

The top 30 scores in each section (soprano 1, soprano 2, alto 1, alto 2, tenor 1, tenor 2, bass 1, bass 2) advance to the second round where they compete with the top 30 in their section from the other quads.

The top 30 scores of each section in Round 2 earn a place in the junior high mixed choir (sopranos, altos, tenors, basses) and the next 30 scores of sopranos and altos earn a place in the junior high treble choir.

This year students will work with conductors and other students through Zoom and a virtual choir concert will be created.

They will begin working together and recording January 7-9, 2021.
