Truck driver injured in rollover crash on Dover-Crescent Road
An Enid truck driver underwent surgery on his left hand Thursday at OU Medical Center to treat injuries he suffered in a rollover accident Thursday morning about 10 miles east of U.S. 81 on the Dover-Crescent Road.
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol media report emailed to the Times and Free Press initially stated that the accident happened when a 2008 International truck driven by Tristan Z. Washington, 33, hit a washout 10.3 miles east of Dover.
However, OHP Lt. Bill Reitz clarified Friday that Washington swerved right to avoid an oncoming truck and lost control when his truck hit a washout in the ditch.
The accident did not involve pavement washouts from recent flooding further west on the same road, which are in the process of being repaired by county crews.
The truck rotated 180 degrees before rolling onto its side, coming to rest on the driver’s side in the south ditch, according to an OHP report.
Jessica Shimanek, Washington’s aunt, reported on Facebook that Washington’s hand was outside the truck’s open window and ended up under the truck when it rolled over.
He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the OHP report.
Washington was transported by Kingfisher EMS to the Oklahoma City hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition, according to the report.
Jessica Shimanek reported in a subsequent Facebook post that Thursday’s surgery went well, but said another operation will be required.
Washington is the great-nephew of county excise board member and former county commissioner Jim Shimanek of Hennessey.
The accident happened just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday and was investigated by OHP Trooper Mark Williams of the Kingfisher County detachment.
