Weather forces early end to KHS regular season; basketball section in this edition

By

As if the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t provide its share of issues during this basketball season, Mother Nature also had to make her presence felt.

The Kingfisher High School basketball teams had to make a number of adjustments to their schedules throughout the season in order to get games in.

It was supposed to culminate last week with a flurry of games before the teams got just over a week off ahead of the playoffs.

However, the flurry inside the gym never happened.

KHS hosted Anadarko on Friday, Feb. 5.

The teams were supposed to host Elk City the next night, the OKC Storm the following Monday and Bethany on Tuesday (Feb. 9).

The regular season would then be completed Thursday, Feb. 11, with a trip to Cache, which itself was a makeup game.

However, none of the final four games happened.

Elk City and KHS opted to not play their games and then weather began to wreak havoc on the rest of the schedule.

That will leave the Kingfisher teams just a shade over two weeks between the end of their regular seasons and the beginning of the playoffs.

That beginning is this weekend.

Kingfisher hosts Elk City in a Class 4A district.

The girls will tipoff at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8.

The winners and losers will advance to the regional tournament, which will also be hosted in Kingfisher.

The KHS boys enter the playoffs ranked No. 1 in Class 4A with their 18-1 record.

They have played in the last three 4A state championship games that were contested and won titles in 2017 and 2019 (the 2020 state tournament was canceled due to COVID).

Kingfisher’s girls are 12-7 and ranked No. 11 in the class.

They were one win shy of reaching state last season.

In this edition, you can find out a little more about Kingfisher’s basketball teams.

Beginning on Page 3B, you’ll find our annual basketball edition that features team photos, individual player photos and bios, pits of the managers, coaches and more.

As with playoff brackets in all classes, dates and times are very fluid due to a number of issues.

We will update as much as possible on our social media pages as well as the website.
