Week at Capitol brings surprise for page

‘Crackshot’ McConnell wins Capitol BB shooting contest

By

Lots of area high school seniors are selected to serve as state legislative pages during the school year, but Katrina McConnell of Kingfisher might be the first one to come home with a new BB gun.

McConnell, 17, served as Kingfisher Rep. Mike Sanders’ page last week and also was the high scorer in a BB gun shooting contest involving her fellow pages and House and Senate members.

The contest was sponsored by the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum in Claremore and Mc-Connell hit an almost perfect bullseye with all three of her shots.

The daughter of Eric and Lisa McConnell, she won a Red Rider BB gun and an orange hunting hat for her achievement.

But in addition to that, McConnell also accomplished the actual goal that inspired her to serve as page.

“I want to understand better how our local government works before I begin voting next year, and I want to gain experience to add to my resume,” Katrina said in her application for the page program.

House pages run messages to legislators while they are in the chamber debating policy and voting on measures. Pages also participate in a mock session, in which they learn legislative procedure and how to write legislation.

“Katrina did a fantastic job during a very busy week at the state Capitol,” said Sanders, R-Kingfisher. “I’m impressed by her desire to learn more about the government process before she begins to vote. I encourage all youth to be as actively engaged in the process as Katrina has chosen to be. She’s also a darn good shot!”
