Wehrenberg family gathers for annual reunion in Loyal

By

Fifty- nine descendants and guests of Chas Wehrenberg gathered at the Loyal United Methodist Church on July 27 for a reunion.

The Wehrenberg family settled in Indian Territory in 1901 near the town of Loyal, which was then known as Kiel. Kiel was settled by German settlers in the late 1800s and it is reported that Kiel got its name from Kiel, Germany.

During World War I, the name was changed by the citizens to Loyal to show its loyalty to the United States.

Four farms were bought close to the Cimarron River and the four sons of Chas, W.C., Charles, George and Louis each claimed their farm. The farm of W.C. still remains in the family as a Centennial Farm.

The relatives of these brothers have gathered for a family reunion each year since 1972.

An afternoon of games, crafts and history was followed by bingo. A potluck supper was shared and a silent auction to support the mission of the family was held.
