Velma J. Reed, 92, of Yukon and formerly of Kingfisher, passed away Nov. 30, 2019, in Oklahoma City.

Graveside service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid.

Velma was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Enid to Joe W. and Thelma D. Holloway Kesner.

She married Arrel Reed on Aug. 12, 1948, in Enid.

Velma diligently pursued her bachelor’s degree in education from Central State University by attending summer school for 10 years while raising a family.

She began her teacher career in Loyal before transferring to Hennessey Public Schools in 1972 where she taught remedial reading for four years.

Velma continued her career in education at Kingfisher Public Schools as an elementary reading and math lab teacher. She earned Teacher of the Year before retiring in 1986.

Upon retirement, Velma enjoyed attending watercolor classes, singing with her twin sister, walking with her husband, reading and traveling to many places abroad with her children and their families.

Velma is survived by her four children: Joel Reed and wife Ann of San Diego, Calif.; Rhonda Simpson and husband Mike of Mustang; Mark Reed and wife Dee Ann of Wichita Falls, Texas; and Alisa Lukasek and husband Don of Houston, Texas. She’s also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and identical twin sister, Thelma Brauser of Yukon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers Jimmie and Roy Kesner.
