Back-to-school time memories
Us kids on the east side car-pooled during my junior high years at Classen High School in OKC. Then, we moved on the north side of town a few blocks from the school. So, unlike my parents, I didn’t have to walk several miles up-hill both to-andfrom school. However, it was a couple, or three blocks, to the school entrance even when I took a short-cut through the sidewalks at the Epworth Methodist Church.
However, I did get to drive the family car to school twice my senior year. It was a blue 1960-something twodoor Chevrolet Impala, and I had to drive it home at lunch time, then walk back to the school. That way Daddy could be at his work at 3 p.m.
Those memories came to mind because school starts here in Hennessey this Thursday, and Meet the Eagles is at 6 p.m. Friday at The Dome.
That means there will be lots of kids on Oklahoma Avenue and Mitchell Road this week and I’m hoping adults, and kids alike, will slow down.
There have been comments in the past by homeowners about students coming out of the high school parking lot too fast, so reminders from parents would help.
Many kids also walk to and from school each day, and may need to be reminded to watch out for traffic.
The start of a new school year is an exciting time for our entire community, and we can’t wait to see what our Eagles accomplish in their classrooms, and on the fields. Check out all of the upcoming events on the district calendar at the Hennessey Public Schools site.
