Cabin Fever causes trip ... and memories

Cabin Fever causes trip ... and memories

It seems like yesterday when Doyle Jones led our caravan over snowy county roads to John Wayne Thorp’s west of Hennessey for a New Year’s Eve card party in 1979.

It was a long and bumpy trip over snow drifts, and I’d expected to see a Welcome to Colorado sign before we got there.

Once there, Donna Melton asked Doyle why we hadn’t taken the highway.

Yes, SH 51, and that’s when I knew my husband, Bill, and Doyle, would be friends. Both liked taking “scenic routes.”

After cards, and an early morning breakfast, we headed home.

Roe LaPorte was in front of us, and was busting drifts at a pretty good clip.

Bill thought he could, too, and, surprise: the 1970s Hennessey Clipper station wagon didn’t clear a snow drift.

Roe knew what happened, and once they got home called Doyle to get his tractor.

Yes, those were the days before cell phones, but it wasn’t long before those guys got “bag phones” from Sid Hobbs that they called Sid-a-Phones.

Bill also bought a Bronco.

It was used to take The Clipper pages to El Reno to be printed. It also came in handy in weather like we’ve had this past week, and we’d drive around and take snow photos.

I miss those times, and wonder why I waited until Saturday afternoon to sweep the snow off my car. My excuse was so I could get cat food.

Then again, I didn’t need more, but I bought some.

The snow had melted, and I’d left my phone home, so no snow photos.

Then when I got home I felt better from being out of the house, and talking to someone besides Tuxedomy- girl-cat. It also caused me to share memories.
