Economic woes thrill climate change addicts

By
(a Column Of Opinion By Gary Reid, Publisher Emeritus)

We recently received a message from Apple on our I-phone advising that “we’re winning the climate change battle” and asking us for a donation to help wage the war.

We looked for an application on the message so that we could respond, “no, idiots!,” but couldn’t find one.

Apple computers’ support of the radical environmentalists’ agenda makes us wish we weren’t writing this on an Apple Mac computer. Or had an Apple cell phone.

The coronavirus pandemic, which has demolished the world and American economies, has revealed the left’s agenda to establish rigid controls over everyday people’s lives and destroy the economies on which average people rely to pay their bills and survive.

The left is giddy over its opportunities to create the changes they want to foist on the world in the name of saving the world.

Fortunately President Trump has been solid in his efforts to return the nation to normalcy, including a functioning economy where people get to have jobs, earn money and pay bills (normal things like that – maybe even drive their cars or fly in a plane somewhere.)

The left is delirious with excitement that the coronavirus arrival has done almost exactly what they’ve been rooting for, shutting down huge segments of the economy, especially the oil and gas industry, since people can’t drive their cars much and airlines are near a shutdown.

As usual Barack Obama who worked for eight years to destroy America’s economy and continues to serve as leftist billionaire George Soros’ talking dummy had something to say – this:

“We’ve seen all too terribly the consequences of those who denied warnings of a pandemic. (Ed. Note: Who said any such thing?) We can’t afford any more consequences of climate denial. All of us, especially young people, have to demand better of our government at every level and vote this fall.”

Numerous media outlets have published pieces touting how the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in carbon emissions.

The Hill after observing how governments are scrambling to find relief for vulnerable industries and people also added this gem:

“But one silver lining is emerging from this economic freeze: carbon emissions are down. And scientists estimate that they could fall even farther, specifically to pre-World War II levels.”

Ed Conway, the economics editor of Sky News, had a particularly disturbing take.

“Don’t take this the wrong way but if you were a young, hardline environmentalist looking for the ultimate weapon against climate change, you could hardly design anything better than [the] coronavirus. Unlike most other such diseases, it kills mostly the old who, let’s face it, are more likely to be climate sceptics. It spares the young. Most of all, it stymies the forces that have been generating greenhouse gases for decades.”

How goulish is that?

In fact, America’s basically free enterprise economy had reduced carbon emissions more than signatories of the Paris climate agreement before the coronavirus pandemic set in. Freer, more prosperous societies are more likely to willingly make efforts to clean up the environment than any rigidly controlled nation. (Think China, the world’s chief CO2 creator.)

One has to wonder how many businesses, damaged by the virus shutdown, will be able to reopen once it is over.

Kurt Schlichter, lawyer-columnist-author, who can point out the idiocy of the left better than most, observes that economic illiterates are running amok during the pandemic.

This calls to mind one of our favorite economic geniuses, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) who said:

“We need to cancel rent until this crisis is over.” One can’t help asking who the renters would contact to fix the water leak or do other upkeep?

We can’t recall canceling rent in the enumerated powers of the president, anyway.

Perhaps Ms. Ilhan and others like her are really more interested in increasing their power rather some helping renters.

Such genius could result in a Venezuela right here at home.

Fortunately, a coronavirus commission to accomplish a return to normalcy has been established.

It has already created a five-step plan to do this. These are the steps:

—Return to a more normal level of business activity at the regional level based on scientific data.

—Slow the spread of the coronavirus while expanding testing, reporting, and contact tracing.

—Continue to build the science.

—Establish U.S. leadership in leading the free world in economic recovery.

—Reduce future risks of pandemics.

Kay C. James, president of the Heritage Foundation, which established the commission, explained:

The commission includes authorities from government, public health, disaster response and relief education and the faith community with the goal to provide policymakers and the public with recommendation to move prudently toward recovery.

It’s a good start.
