Face of Democratic party? Nancy for big fit or Bernie for socialist agenda?

We’re not sure who has become the “face” of the Democratic Party.

Before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s temper tantrum in tearing up her copy of President Trump’s State of the Union speech (for TV cameras) as soon as he finished speaking, we thought it would have been Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont Socialist-Independent who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president.

Pelosi’s actions would have been acceptable only to the most severely-afflicted Trump haters.

One cartoonist portrayed the scene with Pelosi depicted as “Cruella” Pelosi, reminiscent of Cruella de Vil in the “101 Dalmatians” movie – pieces of paper flying around her head as she tore up the speech behind the president.

She asked for it with her sharply reduced introduction of the president.

The State of the Union is traditionally held in the House chamber with the speaker having the honor of introducing the president.

That Was a Rather Cool Introduction

Rather than the normal verbiage which goes something like “Members of Congress, I have the high privilege and distinct honor of presenting to you the president of the United States” and which speakers of both parties have used in the past whether introducing a president of their own party or the other, Pelosi mumbled something like “here he is.”

It could be that President Trump got the icy greeting rolling by not shaking Pelosi’s outstretched hand (hopefully, he didn’t see it) but there was little doubt that grudges ruled the day.

President Trump played his hand well, never once mentioning impeachment in his speech. (The sham was dismissed by the Senate the next day.)

He just mentioned the many improvements that have occurred in the country since he became president as his friends on the other side of the aisle snarled, grimaced and made numerous aside comments to others sitting nearby, refusing to rise during the numerous standing ovations.

The president’s approval ratings rose the following day, possibly causing him to consider urging Pelosi and Co. to start another impeachment effort right away.

The president didn’t seem at all fazed by the occasional boos he got from the other side.

Bernie Shines in Iowa

Apparently Bernie Sanders did fine in the Iowa caucus where the Democrat polling results were finally released late.

The Democrats are almost in as big a frenzy trying to stop Sanders, who is setting the tone for the party with his socialist proposals, as they are in attempting to unseat the president.

Party leaders realize that American voters won’t support an openly socialist candidate for the nation’s highest office.

Strangely, all the other candidates are following the Sanders model, apparently intent on capturing enough of the core constituency to gain the nomination.

Meanwhile, Republicans are ready to drive Sen. Mitt (“Benedict Arnold”) Romney from party ranks for joining Democrats in voting in favor of convicting President Trump on one of the two impeachment articles.

Mitt might still be mad about losing to Trump in the 2016 race for the party nomination.

He might not be on many Republicans’ Christmas card list in the future.

Just a hint from a country boy: don’t run for president again as a Republican.

One Republican legislator from Utah reportedly has filed a bill allowing Utahans to call an election to recall U.S. senators – not saying who.

After the fireworks last week, Democrats have a decision to make: beating the impeachment horse all year or engaging the president on issues.

We’re thinking they will continue to try to prove they were right, and Senate Republicans – and likely a majority of Americans – were wrong.

They still want to hear what John Bolton has to say and they know the mainstream media will back up their play whatever they decide.

Their big question is how to “get to” the president.

He not only doesn’t quail before their abuse, he seems to enjoy it – giving back as good as he gets, maybe better. Democrats have never had to deal with such an opponent before.

It all bodes for a no-holds-barred 2020 election year.
