Next Question: Why? We have reviewed
We have reviewed “what” has been accomplished thus far by the locally based non-profit Unity above Self in America (UaSiA), and “how” these results have been achieved. This letter will review the “why” behind the effort. There are three aspects to the “why.” Why the effort is worth the pain, why we are doing it this way, and why it is the job of common people like ourselves to tackle such a huge problem.
Love is the answer to the first question. Love, really? Yes, love! Tom Coburn told me repeatedly he was spending his remaining time working hard on this unsolved problem because he “loved” his grandchildren and their future depended on it. Who among us is not willing to suffer and sacrifice for their grandchildren? Who among us doesn’t recognize that if we don’t change our ways and begin to work together across party lines and seek shared sacrifice, that we are leaving a terrible mess for our grandchildren? This is why the solution is worth the sacrifice – Love.
Why try to solve the problem this way? The common approach to American politics says if we just would elect the “right” people the problems would go away. Tom Coburn spoke directly to this in his book and we all see it at play. When the “right” people finally get elected the “wrong” system at work in D.C. corrupts them and they begin to behave just like all the others before them and nothing for the common good changes. This effort turns that thinking upside down and says that our emphasis must be on changing the game not changing the players of the game. We believe that all members of Congress will begin behaving better only when it serves their own interest to behave better and that “we the people” are smart enough to both recognize that and demand that. Congress has taught us that they will only start doing their job of passing an annual budget when their pay depends on it. This answers “why” this proposed solution.
Lastly, why is it our job as common people? First it is our job because “we the people” own this country. Owners instinctively find solutions when faced with big problems. Owners realize Congress works for “we the people,” not vice versa. If the opposite is true and Congress is over the people, then we are all victims. Victims don’t find solutions, victims place blame. This effort says “we the people” are owners, we control Congress and it is our duty to step in and demand a solution to the out of control spending problem Congress has created.
UaSiA recognizes that our military personnel have given their very lives for this great nation and we will not stand by and watch it self-destruct by out of control spending.
This answers the “why” and concludes our look back. Next week we will tie it all together and wrap up with a look forward that directly answers Gary Reid’s question, “So what are we going to do about it?”
