ON BEING INFORMED

Dear Editor,

I read with interest and enjoyed your editorial on peacemakers (27 February 2019 -View from Behind the Plow).

In it, you point out the positives of remembering that Jesus is the ultimate role model while honoring and respecting sacrifices and leadership of both Christian Americans like Jim Mattis and George Washington as well as non-Christian world leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and the Dalai Lama.

Your article suggests that we can have strong beliefs yet still respect the views of others. It goes on to point out that one can strive to be a peacemaker while carrying the title of warrior such as a United States Marine.

You also remind us of the value of being well-read, something Jim Mattis believes strongly in and that our present culture too rarely takes time for. I personally believe a lifelong reading habit begins with reading the newspaper and growing from there.

In summary I read your article to advocate for valuing peacemakers, respecting others who live in service to the greater good even though their thoughts and beliefs may differ from our own, and appreciating the sacrifice our military makes to protect us. It also challenges all of us to increase our commitment to reading.

I support all of these things and thank you for writing about them. It’s nice to be reminded of uplifting truths such as these.
