LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Down not out
I was disappointed with our City Council members vote, or should I say non-vote regarding the Sober Living Homes. It became obvious the zoning codes we were “required” by the City to apply for, never fit the need at all, as noted by those present at the meeting. It was stated in the meeting that Kingfisher has no zoning allowances that fit the request. Really – then why were we told exactly what to apply for, only to be told nothing the City has fits our model?
This left questions on all sides. In response, the Council chose not to vote; rather, let the motion die for want of a second. Perhaps the City should have made that clear from the beginning rather than leading Frontline and the other parties through a three-month process only to choose not to vote on the requests.
I respect and appreciate the men and women in our City government. They are my friends. They do a great job for our City, but I think someone dropped the ball on this one… It appeared no one seemed to really know how to handle the situation; especially when asked about American Disabilities Act and Federal Housing laws, which provide allowances for Sober Living Homes within neighborhood settings, without zoning requirements.
I can tell you Frontline will continue to pursue property options to get this ministry up and running. The overall support from this Community far outweighs the opposition and that is extremely encouraging! I know God is in this and His Plan will manifest. We are hopeful for Frontline and a similar ministry model’s success. I have no doubt someone, somewhere will help us see this through to the end. It’s a need this Community must address. As noted in the meeting, “Addicts are not monsters”. Honestly, they are your family members and your friends, lost in a pit of self-destruction and despair. They need us – are you willing to take the risk?
