Local family of veterans remembered

By

Memorial Day just passed. It is a time to honor those who served in the military, family members and friends who have passed on.

We have a beautiful cemetery that is kept in excellent condition by our city workers. A big thank you to those who proposed and promoted the temporary one-fourth cent sales tax to honor those who served in the military by the erection of the black marble stone in our cemetery. So very impressive.

On display in the cemetery is the saying, “All Gave Some, Some Gave All.” I think of my neighbor back in the 1950s when I was growing up on a farm near Loyal. His name was Simon Peter Wilczek. As I recall there were 18 children born in this family with three of them dying very young. Of the 15 children that lived to be adults, Simon, Raymond, Lawrence, Louis, Ernest and Joe served in World War II. Charles was too young to go. This family gave a lot. All of the Wilczek boys came home safe. That is remarkable.

Thank you, Simon Peter Wilczek and all your boys who served so gallantly. We need to do more to honor and reward our veterans. Yes, it is so true, all gave some and some gave all. God bless our veterans.
