Mamdani’s influence still uncertain
When you wonder how a majority of people in New York City could have elected a loud and vocal foreign-born socialist mayor, you might think remove the Democrat- promoted policies that influenced those voters.
A journalist for the Washington Examiner named Jeremiah Poff, the magazine’s Restoring America editor, quotes a billionaire in a recent email, saying: “When 70% of millennials say they are pro-socialist, we need to to do better than simply dismiss them by saying that they are stupid or entitled or brainwashed; we should understand why.”
Then the poster suggests that when they have too much student debt or that housing is too unaffordable, “then one will have negative capital and-or find it very hard to start accumulating capital in the form of real estate; and if one has no stake in the capitalist system, then one may turn against it.”
The author of the cited post was entrepreneur Peter Thiel, addressing the causes of growing disillusionment among younger generations.
The left-wing politicians who created the conditions that Thiel cites may have intended those very conditions in order to change U.S. government thereby increase those same politicians’ power.
It reminds me of the old Arkansas farmers’ alleged trick to round up herds of wild hogs on their property: Surround a feeder with a fence with an open gate that allows the hogs to enter freely to eat an easy meal until they get used to the largesse and the approach of the farmer with more feed. When the herd coming to the feeder gets large enough that there’s enough to sell, the farmer drops the gate, trapping the razorbacks, loads them up and takes them to market.
••• It’s sad to think of young people today spending four years in college and gaining a degree that qualifies them only to flip hamburgers or wash dishes, a degree they thought would give them a comfortable life but doesn’t and is also accompanied with a loan that must be repaid. Hint: gender studies is not a degree most businesses are looking for in an employee. And the bill always comes due on debts of every kind.
Forbes magazine recently cited a Pew Research Center survey recently showing that the value of a four-year degree is increasingly questioned.
Many companies have dropped degree requirements for new hires, opting instead to evaluate candidates based on experience. In fact, the survey showed that more than half of college graduates are under-employed and even after a decade after graduation, 45% remain in that position.
Is it any wonder that such younger citizens are shifting away from America’s traditional economy.
It might be observed that those willing to take a low paying starting job and heartily apply themselves will catch the attention of their employer and find a path to success.
Those who think joining protests against America’s free enterprise system likely will do the exact opposite.
If they knew much history at all, they would realize that socialism, which they think might take care of them, traditionally devolves into communism and its coercion, leaving them with unmet needs and without liberty: dictatorship.
Hint: Individuals who learn a trade that provides a needed service can go to work at good wages without the debt. Many businesses will hire new employees as apprentices, teach them the job and then advance them to better paying positions.
The piece by Becky Noble then reported: “Trouble in Lefty Paradise? Recent Mamdani Moves Might Already Be Giving His Radical Base Buyer’s Remorse.”
It followed with this: “With a little over two weeks to go before New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is sworn into office, Americans all over the country will be watching as the Big Apple begins its experiment in socialism. Mamdani is a textbook socialist. He comes from a well-to-do family and has never had a real job, with the possible exception of State Assemblyman. He has lots of grandiose socialist ideas in mind, but no idea how to pay for them. But as he gets closer to the Mayor’s Office, the people who helped get him there are afraid he is going to go squishy on them and their causes after Inauguration Day on January 1.
Then it continued: “The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) claim Zohran Mamdani as a member, and they amassed an army of roughly 99,000 people who conducted door-knocking, phone banking, and other campaign operations for him. Mamdani still has ties to the group, so much so that among the hundreds of people on his transition team, 26 of those are members of New York City’s DSA chapter. So, what has the DSA convinced that Zohran Mamdani is going to go wobbly on them once he is the mayor?
“Since his victory in November, Mamdani has announced that Jessica Tisch would remain New York City Police Commissioner, not a popular move with a group that advocates for abolishing police and prisons. Mamdani has also endorsed New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is not a DSA candidate, in his run to unseat Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman (NY-10). But perhaps Mamdani’s most egregious offense is his Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump, which appeared to be friendly. Trump also stated that he and Mamdani agreed on many issues, like affordability and crime.”
