Yankee ingenuity comes in handy during this year’s Wimbledon

By

Some of you know that I’m competitive when it comes to playing cards, but few know I play a mean air guitar, or that I love tennis.

It’s my sport.

I used to be a good ball chaser when we played doubles on the old tennis courts years ago, but I rarely hit the ball, and now it’s a spectator sport.

It’s the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club kind of tennis: Wimbledon! And it’s happening now.

I don’t get up early every morning to watch it, but I do record it, and enjoy saying DUECE in my best British accent.

It was exciting back in the day to watch Americans Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Sweet Pete (Sampras) and Andre Agassi at Wimbledon.

Thankfully we had Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf on the women’s side. Also Americans Lindsay Davenport and then and now, the famous Williams sisters, Venus and Serena.

This year I watched the 15-year-old wild-card from Florida, Coco Gauff. I was filled with emotion when the kid beat her idol, Venus. She won a come-from-behind third round, but was knocked off in the fourth.

I’m hoping Roger Federer (Switzerland) and Rafael Nadal (Spain) end up in the finals Sunday. They still have the semi-finals to win at this writing.

It’s been fun to watch Serena Williams in the mixed doubles this year, and she should win the women’s single championship.

A trip to England to see Wimbledon was on my bucket list for years.

I finally crossed it off my list years ago because of prohibitive travel and court-side ticket costs.

It’s also the aging me.

Now I can watch the matches on TV without walking for miles, sitting in the sun for hours or spending more than the cost of my car for the trip.

Now I can sit in my living room and watch it on my 42-inch TV, have a cold Dr. Pepper and go to the bathroom on commercials.

There was a problem at the start of Wimbledon this year because I couldn’t see the scores at the left of the screen. Buying a bigger TV was out, so I moved to the other end of the couch.

Problem solved.
