Cashion narrowly misses girls track regional crown
Abby Hobgood and Khloe Kastner are headed to state in four different events and with a combined seven regional gold medals pushing them there.
A senior, Hobgood won gold in three events and silver in another as Cashion’s girls narrowly missed out on a team championship at a Class 2A regional on their home track.
Hobgood was the regional champ in the 100 meter dash and was also a part of the gold medal winning 400 meter and 800 meter relays.
The mile relay team featuring Hobgood was second as Cashion scored 136 points, just five behind regional champ Tonkawa.
Ripley was a distant third with 68.
Chevy Eubanks, Kastner and Abby’s younger sister Reese Hobgood joined Abby in the 400 relay that crossed the line in 50.07.
Abby Hobgood’s next event was the 100 and she ran it in 12.59 for gold. Reese Hobgood was sixth in 13.58.
Next up was the 800 relay which also consisted of Kastner, Eubanks and freshman Kate Nabavi. They won in 1:45.58.
The mile relay team crossed in 4:13.09. It featured Sierra McCracken, Eubanks and Nabavi.
Kastner struck gold in the two relays with Hobgood, but also earned two more on her own.
She was the champ in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.94. She defeated her teammate, Eubanks, who was second in 27.27 and also qualified for state.
Kastner, only a freshman, then won the long jump with her leap of 16 feet, 3 1/2 inches.
Among the other fourevent qualifiers was Nabavi.
In addition to the 800 and mile relays, Nabavi was part of the runner-up two-mile relay team.
She was joined by Reese Hobgood, Sierra McCracken and Addison McCracken to run it in 10:17.25.
Nabavi then was the bronze medalist in the 800 with her time of 2:26.35. Sierra McCracken was fourth in the event in 2:26.43, which also got her to state.
Also scoring points in running events were Sierra McCracken and Jaylee Harp, who were fourth and sixth in the 400.
Brooke Shafer was an automatic qualifier in the shot put as her throw of 31 feet, 7 1/2 inches was good for third place.
She was also fourth in the high jump by clearing 4-8, a height that landed her at state in that event as well.
The Cashion boys had automatic qualifiers in four events and scored 46 points, which was good for sixth place as a team.
The mile relay team of Cole Tichenor, Travis Loeffelholz, King Underwood and Hank Brown picked up a bulk of those points.
Their time of 3:31.80 was good for a silver medal.
Brown was also third in the 100, Tichenor third in the 400 (and Brown fourth) and Luke Baustert was the bronze medalist in the pole vault.
Brown’s time in the 400 qualified him for the state meet in that event as well.
