Trey Green and Jett Sternberger will get to be basketball teammates at least one more time. The Kingfisher High School seniors were among those selected Wednesday to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State basketball team.

They were named to the Large West team which is comprised of schools in 4A-6A. The Large West will play the Large East at the annual OCA All-State games at Oral Roberts University’s Mabee Center the last week of July.

Okarche’s Cristian Avila earned the same honor for the Small West, which is comprised of teams in 3A and below.

Avila helped Okarche to a 25-6 record and a spot in the Class A semifinals. It was Okarche’s first trip to state since 2012.

The senior scored 43 points in Okarche’s season-opening win at Preston. He had 32 points in the team’s area championship win against second-ranked Glencoe.

For the season, Avila averaged 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game.

Meanwhile, Sternberger and Green were busy making history for Kingfisher.

They led the Yellowjackets to a 28-1 record and a second Class 4A state championship in three years.

Green led the team in scoring in 2019 with 16.3 points per game. He shot 56 percent from the field and also averaged 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

Since Green joined the team prior to his sophomore season, KHS went 84-5 and played in three state title games.

He scored 1,970 points for his career (his freshman season was played at Waynoka) and was a part of 103 career wins.

Sternberger also took part in 103 wins, all of them as a KHS starter.

That’s the most in school history, as are his 2,037 career points.

He averaged 15.8 points, 4.4. rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals as a senior. Sternberger led the team in 3-pointers made (92) as well as 3-point percentage

(44.2).

Kingfisher assistant coach Danny Green, Trey’s father, will also be one of the coaches for the Large West team.

Green was selected for that honor last month.

To be eligible for All-State, players must first be selected as an All-Star by Class.

Joining the Kingfisher County trio as All-Stars were Okarche’s Tucker Neuenschwander in Class A and Hennessey’s Hugo Rodriguez in 2A.
