Cushing takes 2 from KHS in district softball doubleheader

By

Kingfisher was short-handed Monday in a pair of district softball losses at Cushing.

Better yet, the Lady Jackets were short-armed.

With starting pitcher Olivia Wilcox home sick, the Lady Jackets dropped 11-3 and 13-2 decisions to Cushing.

“It was going to be tough over there,” coach Danny Green said. “But with Olivia out, obviously that doubles the difficulty.”

The defeats dropped the Lady Jackets to 13-7 overall and 2-3 in District 4A-1.

The Lady Jackets hung tough in the early innings of the opener.

Emma Lukasek drove home Mia Farrell with a single to give KHS a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.

After the hosts posted a pair of runs in the bottom half, Kingfisher came back with two more in the second.

Taylor Mills tripled and scored on Jodie Hill’s RBI groundout and Merrin Evans, who walked, was able to score when Farrell reached on an error.

But Cushing was able to tie it in the bottom of the second, then broke the game open with six runs in the third.

Natalie Dick was tagged with the loss. Seven of the 11 runs were earned as KHS committed three errors.

Farrell and Mills had two hits apiece for the Jackets, who had seven overall.

Evans got the nod for the circle in the second game. This time KHS committed six errors which led to eight unearned Cushing runs.

The Lady Jackets again got off to a good start as Farrell led off the game with a single and Kaycee Karcher walked.

Both eventually scored as Dick sent Farrell home on her groundout and Lukasek’s ability to reach on an error scored Karcher.

Kingfisher carried a 2-1 lead into the third before Cushing erupted for seven runs.

The Lady Tigers took advantage of five hits and two KHS errors in the frame.

Farrell, Dick, Mya Dewberry and Evans had Kingfisher’s four hits.
