Dominant 2nd quarter leads KHS past Tuttle
It took two timeouts and nearly a full quarter, but Kingfisher finally got something going against Tuttle.
The result on Tuesday was a 45-34 victory for the Lady Jackets at the APB in their final game before the Christmas holiday.
Both teams were scoreless for more than three minutes until Tuttle finally broke the drought at the 4:51 mark. By that time, coach Taylor Young had already used up one timeout.
She burned another with 1:11 to go in the quarter when Jordyn Jackson’s 3-pointer put the visitors up 15-8.
That timeout worked. Tuttle, ranked 16th in 4A, didn’t score another field goal the rest of the half.
Kingfisher didn’t score again in the first, but went on a 17-1 run in the second quarter to take over the game.
It opened up with two treys from Reese Roof and another from Mattie Slezickey.
Ela Hartman and Taitym Walker also had two field goals each in the quarter.
That run put KHS up nine at the half. The Lady Jackets’ offense cooled off in the third quarter and Tuttle regained some of its own.
Two Lakyn Smith 3-pointers helped Tuttle get within six.
But that’s as close as the Lady Tigers got.
Kingfisher was 7 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth - and 11 of 15 for the game - to keep the Lady Tigers at arms’ length.
Roof made her fourth of four 3-pointers in that fourth and both of her foul shots to finish with a gamehigh 18 points.
Slezickey scored 8 while Abbie Myers contributed 7 points and Hartman 6.
KHS is currently ranked fifth in 4A and goes into the holiday with a 5-2 record. Tuesday’s win moved the Lady Jackets to 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference games.
Kingfisher returns to the court Dec. 29 against 2A’s second-ranked Howe in the Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic in Ada.
