Dover, Lomega advance in district

Agra and Carney... thanks for coming.

The Class B basketball district championship games at Lomega were an all-Kingfisher County affair thanks to the host school and Dover.

Combined, Lomega and Dover eliminated the boys and girls teams from Agra and Carney in district openers on Thursday as the 2021 postseason officially got under way.

That set up a Dover vs. Lomega matchup in both the girls and boys championship games Friday afternoon (after press time).

The schools opted to move up the tournament to ensure they got it in ahead of predicted inclement weather.

Lady Raiders hit triple digits again

According to Oklahoma high school sports historian Chris Wilfong, the 100-point barrier has been broken 61 times by girls teams in the past eight seasons.

Nearly one-fifth of those occurrences are due to the Lomega Lady Raiders.

They surpassed the century mark for the 12th time in that span — eight more than any other team — and for the third time this season in a 116-32 victory over Agra.

The visitors scored half their points in a frantic first quarter as they buried four 3-pointers.

However, they only managed one field goal and five points over the next two quarters as Lomega’s defense tightened up.

To make matters worse for Agra, Lomega’s offense never lagged.

Adysen Wilson made three of Lomega’s four first-quarter 3-pointers and Sydni Walker scored 10 points on the inside as the Lady Raiders built a 32-16 lead.

The barrage continued with a 30-3 run in the second quarter and a 29-2 push in the third.

Five Lady Raiders scored in double figures, led by Wilson’s 19. She buried five 3-pointers.

Aby Swart made three more as she poured in 18 points.

Emma Duffy knocked down 16 points while Walker finished with 13.

Ranked No. 1, Lomega upped its season record to 20-0 as it continues its defense of the Class B crown.

Additions beneficial as Lady Longhorns win big

Dover coach Brett Pitts said prior to his team’s elimination game against Carney that he’s still unsure which of his young teams would show up.

“If the right one shows up, we might beat them by 20,” he said. “If it’s the wrong one, we’re liable to lose by that much.”

Fortunately for Dover, it was the former.

The Lady Longhorns got a boost from a couple of additions to the roster and assured themselves a spot in this week’s regional tournament with a 67-49 victory over Carney.

The game marked the first appearance of the season by junior twins Kamree and Karlee McNulty.

The two were unable to get cleared to play all season by the OSSAA, but that clearance found its way prior to the playoffs.

“It gives us a level of depth we haven’t had all season,” Pitts said. “They make us so much better as a team.”

The duo backed that up with a combined 22 points, including 17 from Karlee McNulty.

She scored 14 points in the second half.

Carney cut what was a 16-point halftime deficit to six points with 2:00 left in the third quarter and then to eight points early in the fourth.

Karlee Harviston answered the fourth-quarter surge with a 3-pointer to push Dover’s lead to 11 points.

Then Karlee McNulty scored five straight points, including a 3-pointer at 3:40 of the fourth, to push the lead to 59-44.

“The girls showed a lot of grit and determination after they lost a lot of the lead,” Pitts said. “It was great to see them respond like that.”

Dover built a 14-11 lead in the first quarter as Madi Moeller made three 3-pointers and scored 10 points.

The big surge came in the second when the Lady Longhorns got points from seven different players and pushed their advantage to 32-18 at the half.

McNulty led the team with her output.

Karlee Harviston and Moeller added 13 points apiece.

Katelyn Harviston added another 11 points.

Dover improved to 6-11 while Carney was eliminated with an 11-8 mark.

Multiple Longhorns step up in victory

Joriaun Caldwell got abig chunk of the buckets.

His teammates got some of the biggest ones.

Dover advanced to the district title game by eliminating Agra 71-59 in their district opener.

“I felt like we executed our game plan really well,” said Dover coach Aaron Norton, whose team improved to 11-9.

“The guys played hard and played as a team.”

Caldwell torched the Bearcats early as he scored 13 points as the Longhorns surged to an 18-6 lead.

The quarter was capped when Caldwell found Emory Norton with a pass and the latter responded with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Dover pushed its lead to 31-16 with 2:00 remaining in the first half on Caldwell’s layup.

The barrage continued in the final 30 seconds when Kasen Harviston nailed a 3-pointer and then Lance Dunigan another as the buzzer sounded for a 40-21 advantage.

Agra kept pace in the second half, but never threatened to come back.

Caldwell added nine more points in the third and scored 27 points.

Damion Turner added 11 points and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Kolten Shaw provided the Longhorns an inside presence and scored eight of his 10 points in the first half.

Norton and Harviston scored eight points apiece as Dover won for the fifth time in six games.

Raiders pull away from Camey

At full strength for the first time in a few weeks, the fourth-ranked Lomega boys had little trouble advancing with a 69-20 victory against Carney.

The game signaled the return of Noah Snowden, who was out of the lineup for multiple games.

However, it wasn’t a smooth opening minutes as Lomega fell behind 4-3.

But the Raiders responded with 18 straight points to close the quarter and took control for the remainder of the game.

Kelby Ott came off the bench to knock down a pair of 3-pointers during the first-quarter run.

Lomega outscored Carney 20-2 in the second during which Noah Snowden scored seven and Blake Snowden six points.

Blake Snowden, with four 3-pointers, eventually led Lomega with 13 points.

Noah Snowden scored 11.

Dion Fisher scored all nine of his points in the first half and Ott also finished with nine.

Lomega improved to 18-3 entering the district championship game.
