Combo of Stone, Birdwell, Cortes lead Yellowjackets to 90-45 quarterfinal victory

Kingfisher had a three-headed monster Thursday night that spelled doom for Fairview.

The Yellowjackets’ varsity squad made its return to the Wheat Capital Tournament and opened play with a 90-45 victory against Fairview at Chisholm High School.

Jarret Birdwell, Matthew Stone and Bijan Cortes combined for 62 points for the top-seeded Jackets.

KHS won the Wheat Capital every year from 2014-18, but sent its junior varsity last season in order to take part in the Tournament of Champions.

Stone helped the Jackets pick up where they left off from the previous five championships as he nailed four 3-pointers in the first 3:30 of the game.

That, plus six points from Birdwell, helped KHS get out to a 24-9 advantage.

The pace picked up on both ends, but Fairview had no chance of keeping up.

By halftime, the Jackets were up 56-24.

Stone had all 22 of his points at that juncture while Birdwell had scored 14. He finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Stone added nine rebounds and seven assists.

Cortes played facilitator for much of the fi rst half before scoring 12 points in the third quarter.

KHS led 68-33 when it was over.

Cortes led all scorers with 24 to go with his eight assists.

Weston Church paced Fairview with 21 points.

The Jackets moved to 8-0 on the season. It was their 30th straight win overall.

Kingfisher played Blackwell in Friday’s semifinal (after press time).

Blackwell knocked off Alva 48-40 in their quarterfi nal game.
