Football talk at Rotary Club

By

JEFF MYERS, left, Kingfisher High School football coach for the past 15 years, was the guest speaker of the Kingfisher Rotary Club last Tuesday. Myers said he currently had 53 ninth through 12th graders out for football this preseason and he was excited to begin the 2019 campaign. He also touched on a variety of subjects, including the future of contact football. He said there is an ever-growing group of persons urging that full-contact football with pads and helmets be eliminated nationwide and in the state due to concerns regarding concussions and brain injuries. Myers said he has at least six more years to coach and he didn’t think anything would happen in that time, but he said changes of some sort were probably inevitable. He added that he and his coaches have addressed concussion concerns by teaching different tackling and blocking techniques, which has eliminated many concussion problems of the past. Myers’ teams have won a state title, reached the state title game five times and he is the winningest high school football coach in KHS history with a record of 155- 44. He was introduced by Jeff Johnson, right. [KT&FP Staff Photo]
