KINGFISHER LIONS CLUB member Zack Meyer, left, with recent guest speaker Josh Fields. Fields is a former OSU quarterback and baseball player who was selected in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft. He now is Kingfisher’s State Farm Insurance agent.

A former Oklahoma State quarterback and professional baseball player is now working in Kingfisher as a State Farm agent.

Josh Fields spoke to the Kingfisher Lions Club last Thursday after recently becoming a part of the Kingfisher community.

Fields works with his wife and they have three children.

“I have been friends with Kirk Milligan since college,” said Fields.

Milligan was the general manager at the former Dobrinski of Kingfisher.

“I had been dabbling in insurance and after his accident I knew that it was what I wanted to do, but I had no idea I would end up in Kingfisher,” Fields said.

Prior to tackling the insurance business, Fields grew up in Stillwater and played college football and baseball.

During his three years at OSU, Fields led the Pokes to two Bedlam victories and two bowl games.

He also had a career batting average of .364 for the baseball team and was a standout third baseman.

Following his junior season, Fields was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round (18th overall) of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.

Fields made his major league debut in September 2006 and hit a pinch-hit home run in his first at-bat in the majors.

He traded to the Kansas City Royals in 2010 and then played for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan in 2011.

Fields compared the atmosphere of baseball games in Japan to a college football game.

“I loved Saturdays when I was playing football, but that was about it,” he said.

The family atmosphere Fields found in baseball was what made him love the sport, he explained.

“We would have a game at 6 and get to the field at noon. We would just hang out and play cards,” he said.

After playing baseball for 15 years, Fields also worked as a scout.

Now, Fields says he is here in Kingfisher “to go to bat for customers,” serving as the middle man between them and “big corporate.”

“I get to actually see and talk to customers and if something isn’t fair I can make calls and say ‘this is what is going on,’” said Fields.

He added that he and his wife are looking forward to being a part of the Kingfisher community and helping out in any way that they can.
