Garber knocks off Cashion girls in finals
Cashion’s girls suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday and they’ve got a Cashion alum partly to blame.
Garber steadily pulled away from the Lady Wildcats for a 44-27 victory in the championship game of the NextEra Energy Resources Invitational.
The win on its home court pushed Garber to 7-0 on the season. The Lady Wolverines are coached by Cashion native Luke Broadbent.
Cashion fell to 5-1 with the defeat.
The Lady Wildcats dominated their first two rounds as they thumped Tonkawa 65-31 in Thursday’s quarterfinal and then Cherokee 40-13 in the semifinals.
Nine different players scored against Tonkawa, led by Brooke Shafer’s 14. Lily Stuemky added 11 and Jaylee Harp scored 10.
Shafer (18) and Harp (10) again hit double digits in the semifinals.
But scoring was tougher against Garber, which allowed an average of 26 points a game in the tournament.
Garber outscored Cashion in each of the first three quarters and never allowed more than eight in any frame.
Shafer was the lone Cashion player in double figures with 14 points.
Reese Hobgood scored six.
Buzzer beater lands Wildcats in 4th
The wrong end of a buzzer beater saw Cashion settle for fourth place in the NextEra Energy Resources Invitational.
Hooker’s Keilan Robinson banked in a shot as time expired Saturday to lift the Bulldogs to a 48-47 victory over Cashion in the boys third-place game.
Robinson’s shot came on a sideline inbound play just moments after Cashion had taken a one-point lead.
That lead was a free throw with 4 seconds remaining by Parker Mitchell.
He was sent to the line with the game tied, but missed the first attempt.
After he made the second - and after a timeout by Hooker - Cashion deflected a long inbound pass by Hooker out of bounds.
After two more timeouts, the Bulldogs got the ball to Robinson, who was able to get to the paint and knock down the game winner as time expired.
Robinson led Hooker with 16 points.
The Bulldogs erased a 13-point first-half deficit to garner the win.
Brian Nabavi put Cashion up 26-13 with a 3-pointer in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs closed the half on an 8-0 run, then outscored Cashion 27-18 in the second half.
Brayden Stuemky went 7 of 11 from 3-point range to lead Cashion with 21 points. Mitchell scored 9.
The Wildcats were sent to the consolation side of the bracket via a 66-52 loss to Chisholm in the semifi nals.
It was Cashion’s second loss of the season to the Longhorns.
The teams were tied at halftime, but Chisholm took a five-point lead into the fourth then outscored Cashion 22-13 in the final eight minutes.
Mitchell poured in 21 points for Cashion while Kyle Yowell added 9.
Cashion opened the tournament with a 76-47 victory over Cherokee.
Mitchell scored 25 and Stuemky 23 in the win while Yowell scored 9.
