Geisler helps Raiders remain in playoff race

The first time Justin Edsall pulled his starters on Thursday, it was to get their attention.

The second time, it was to get them some rest.

Lomega staved off elimination for at least one day as it pushed out Mulhall-Orlando 66-19 at home in a Class B regional consolation quarterfinal contest.

The victory advanced the Raiders to the consolation semifinal Friday afternoon (after press time) against Timberlake at Pioneer-Pleasant Vale. Timberlake was defeated 66-59 by No. 8 Lookeba-Sickles Thursday night in a winner’s bracket game.

The ninth-ranked Raiders were pushed to the consolation bracket in last Saturday’s loss to Okeene.

Early on against M-O, it appeared the Raiders were still feeling the effects of that loss.

Edsall pulled all five of his starters about a minute into the contest.

Lomega didn’t score until Zach Geisler made a 3-pointer with 4:17 left in the first quarter.

That was the first of four treys by the senior in the quarter as Lomega entered the second quarter up 13-12.

“He kept us afloat,” said Edsall of Geisler’s first-quarter shooting spree. “My starters didn’t come back into the game until the second quarter and they played a lot better that time around.”

Lomega gave up five field goals in the first quarter, but just two the rest of the game. After scoring a dozen points in the first eight minutes, the Panthers managed seven over the next 24.

The Raiders’ pressure, both in the press and half court, started to crack the Panthers.

Karson Glazier had two steals and three layups over the final 2:09 of the first half as Lomega pushed its lead to 30-14.

The rest of the game was much the same.

Edsall pulled out his starters with 2:10 left in the third quarter and the team up 46-17.

Geisler led the team with 14 points, all in the first half.

Freshman Blake Snowden scored 11 points and Noah Snowden nine.

Glazier finished with eight points and Brock Mowery seven as 11 different Raiders scored.

Lomega was 16-10 after the win. M-O’s season ended with a 3-22 record.
