Jackets ‘Cache’ in on late surge
In a game of runs, Kingfi sher had the last - and biggest - one.
The Jackets outscored visiting Cache 12-0 during a pivotal fourth quarter stretch Tuesday to earn a 50-40 victory.
The victory was Kingfisher’s sixth in its last eight games as the Jackets improved to 11-7. They already have four more wins than all of last season.
Kingfisher built - and subsequently gave up leads multiple times during the game.
With his team down 6-3 and struggling in the first quarter, coach Colby Connel called a timeout.
The Jackets responded with a 9-1 run to claim the lead after a quarter.
Cache came back with a 9-2 run in the second quarter to tie up the game.
After a timeout, Kingfi sher closed on a 9-1 run for an eight-point halftime lead.
The Bulldogs again erased their deficit in the third quarter and the game stayed within one or two possessions well into the fourth quarter.
It was tied up at 32-all when the Jackets’ Jhett Birdwell knocked down a 3-pointer with 5:02 to play.
It was Birdwell’s first points of the game and they proved to be huge as they were the first of a dozen straight by KHS.
The Bulldogs had no answer until Jacob Woommavovah made a 3-pointer with 1:30 to play.
Cache didn’t get closer than eight points.
Kingfisher went 7 of 9 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to maintain its lead.
That included one by freshman Daxx Compton, who completed a threepoint play for the 44-32 lead.
Compton scored five of his eight points in the fourth.
Cash Laird sparked the team early. He scored half of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter.
Hayes White chipped in 15 and Birdwell scored all five of his points in the fourth.
