The Kingfisher boys soccer team is in the busiest stretch of its season - and also its most important.

By Thursday, KHS will have played four games in a week, including three in a four-day stretch.

With losses in the first two, Tuesday night’s home matchup with Astec Charter will likely determine Kingfisher’s playoff fate. (Note: That game took place after press time of this edition.)

The heartbreaker came Monday night when Mount St. Mary scored on a penalty kick with just 2:59 left to earn a 2-1 victory in Kingfisher.

The Jackets had just tied it up less than two minutes earlier on an indirect free kick in the penalty box.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Rockets’ keeper was given a yellow card for stalling tactics, leading to Julian Marshall’s goal on an assist from Santiago Ortega.

That leveled it up, but the Rockets were able to take advantage of a late penalty for the win.

Combined with last Friday’s 8-3 loss at Crossings Christian, the Jackets fell to 2-3 in District 3A-2 with four to play.

Astec Charter entered Tuesday night’s game with a 2-2 district mark. Kingfisher’s three remaining matchups after Tuesday are against teams with a combined two district wins.

All three goals in Monday’s game were scored in the second half.

Crossings Christian was able to strike early against KHS and build a comfortable lead.

The Jackets did get goals from Ortega, Eduardo De La Torre and Hector Valles.

KHS is 5-5 overall.

The Lady Jackets didn’t have a game Monday, but were dealt a 5-0 loss by Crossings Christian on Friday.

The win likely secured the district title for the Saints.

Kingfisher fell to 2-1 in the district and 4-4 overall.

The Lady Jackets can still place second in the district, which would secure them a home playoff game.
