KHS baseball gets first crack at Heritage Hall

By

Kingfisher’s win over Heritage Hall in the Class 4A boys basketball championship game wasn’t even the first for the Jackets over the Chargers that day.

That distinction went to the KHS baseball team, which got a complete-game gem from Chase Gustafson in a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon on the Heritage Hall campus.

Gustafson gave up seven hits and two earned runs over seven innings. He struck out five and didn’t allow a run over the final four frames.

That allowed the KHS offense to catch up and it did so in the top of the fourth, thanks in part to Gustafson.

Ian Daugherty’s double brought home Cole Cross-white, who led off the inning with a single.

Daugherty then tied the game on Gustafson’s double.

The Jackets took the lead in the fifth inning when Brady Friesen crossed home on Crosswhite’s RBI groundout.

Friesen had earlier singled.

Daugherty and Zach Goodwin had two hits apiece for KHS, which tallied eight as a team.

Gustafson walked just one batter on the mound.

The win improved the Jackets to 3-0 on the season.

The Jackets scored five runs in the top of the eighth Friday to earn an 8-3 win at Guthrie in extra innings.

Cooper Covalt reached on an error to lead off the eighth and eventually scored the go-ahead run when he stole home.

Will Taylor was at-bat when that happened, then added to it when his single scored his brother, Tate Taylor. Goodwin made it 6-3 when his double scored Will Taylor.

Caleb Dick and Noah Schaefer added to the lead when they scored on a passed ball and wild pitch.

Goodwin made the lead stick as he worked around a pair of singles to grab the win.

Creighton Bugg and Friesen combined on the first seven innings of work. They gave up five hits, two earned runs and struck out six, five of them by Friesen in his three innings.

The season opened last Thursday with a 6-2 win over the OKC Broncos in Oklahoma City.

Daugherty, Covalt and Crosswhite combined to limit the Broncos to four hits while striking out six.

Daugherty, who got the win with his 3 2/3 innings, also drove in a pair of runs with a single in the top of the fifth inning.

That’s when Kingfisher’s two-run lead ballooned to 6-0.

Tate Taylor and Caleb Dick had run-scoring hits in the second inning before KHS added four in the fourth.

Tate Taylor finished with two RBIs while Will Taylor added another.
