KHS softball goes 3-2 at Woodward

By

Kingfisher went 3-2 in its first tournament of the softball season and gave head coach Danny Green reason for optimism.

The Lady Jackets knocked off OKC Broncos, Beaver and Guymon JV while suffering losses to Woodward and Watonga.

In five games, KHS collected 52 total hits and didn’t get fewer than six in any game.

“We are definitely hitting the ball better at this point in the season than we have the last couple years,” Green said after the season’s first week.

“We just need to be consistent on the defensive side and clean up our base running.”

The biggest offensive output came Saturday in a 13-2 victory against Guymon JV in which KHS belted 20 hits.

Natalie Dick got the win in the circle and also delivered three hits, an RBI and scored twice.

Kynli Boeckman led the charge with a 4 for 4 showing and drove in a pair of runs.

Taylor Mills and Emma Lukasek had two hits apiece and they were joined by Mya Dewberry and Brittany Willson in driving in two runs each.

The tournament ended with a 3-2 loss to Watonga, which scored in the bottom of the fifth inning to get the victory.

KHS had eight hits, but managed just one run in each of the first two innings.

Mills had three of Kingfisher’s hits and scored once. Dewberry drove in Mills with a first-inning single.

Merrin Evans doubled in the second and later scored on an error.

The game was tied 2-2 at that point and remained there until the Lady Eagles ended it.

Evans gave up just two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings and struck out five while surrendering seven hits.

Kingfisher opened the tournament with an 8-4 win over the Broncos, the team that eventually went on to claim the championship.

“That’s how wide open it was this year,” Green said.

Up 1-0, the Lady Jackets broke open the game with a seven-run third inning.

Jodie Hill had an RBI double and Boeckman followed with a two-run single.

Later in the frame, Willson drove home a run and Dick two more with her triple.

Willson, Evans, Boeckman and Taylor had two hits apiece as KHS accounted for 12 total.

Dick, Hill and Boeckman had two RBIs apiece.

Evans got the win with four innings of work. She gave up seven hits and struck out one.

KHS had just six hits, but got double-digit runs in an 11-3 victory against Beaver.

Down 3-0, the Lady Jackets took advantage of five walks and timely hits to score eight runs in the second.

That included a two-run triple by Taylor.

Dick had three of Kingfisher’s hits and drove in three runs.

She also picked up the pitching win as she struck out three and didn’t give up a walk.

The team fell behind Woodward 7-0 and couldn’t make it up in a 7-3 defeat.

Hill had three of Kingfisher’s hits and drove in a run.

Boeckman was 2 for 2 and scored while Mills drove in a pair of runs with her hit.

KHS was 3-3 overall entering this week.
