Lady Eagle defense puts Casady in spin cycle
Hennessey didn’t score much Friday night in its Class 3A district championship... but the Lady Eagles didn’t need to.
The 11th-ranked Lady Eagles downed Casady 36-10 in the Eagle Event Center to begin their playoff quest.
Casady managed just four field goals - one in each quarter.
Hennessey was led by Clare Munroe, who scored 9 points while Ally Painter and Emma Copeland scored 8 apiece.
Hennessey was up 8-2 after a quarter and expanded it to 19-4 by halftime.
Copeland scored 6 of those points in the first quarter and then Munroe added 6 in the second.
Painter scored 6 of her points in the second half when Hennessey outscored the Cyclones 20-6.
The Lady Eagles improved to 20-5. They will host Holland Hall at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a regional semifinal. Holland Hall beat Sperry 48-33 on Friday.
Casady boys topple Eagles
A disastrous second quarter landed the Hennessey boys in the con- solation bracket of the 3A playoffs.
Casady used a 28-6 run in those second eight minutes to earn a 74-51 win over the Eagles on Friday.
The loss has Hennessey one win from elimination and needing three wins this week in a regional to advance to area.
The first shot comes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when the Eagles host winless Sperry in a consolation quarterfinal.
The rest of the regional will be played at Millwood.
Hennessey made four 3-pointers and led Casady 17-16 after a quarter.
Two came from Hagen Copeland while Beau Vinson and Brytan Gardner each knocked down one.
But the Eagles only made two more the rest of the night and the Cyclones roared to the lead with their massive second quarter.
Sam Edwards, James Elder and Kub Malecki all scored at least 7 points in the frame as Casady took a lead it wouldn’t lose.
They pushed their advantage to 24 entering the fourth quarter.
Four different Cyclones scored in double figures, led by Edwards and Collin Stanton, who scored 16 each.
Copeland scored 20 to lead the Eagles. They also got 17 from Vinson while Gardner scored 9.
