Lady Eagles stifle Seiling offense for title
Hennessey locked down Seiling’s offense to complete an impressive three-day run through the Holiday Classic Tournament in Mooreland.
The Lady Eagles downed previously unbeaten Seiling 47-24 in Saturday’s championship game to move to 5-0 on the season.
Seiling had scored at least 50 points in each of its first three games of the season, but struggled to get going in the title game.
Hennessey held the Ladycats to just six first-half points and led by 14.
Seiling finally started to find some success in the third quarter with four 3-pointers and 15 points, but couldn’t make up any ground.
That was due in large part to Clare Munroe, who came alive with 12 of her game-high 18 points in the frame.
Hennessey then out-scored Seiling, ranked third in B-I, 12-3 in the fourth.
Ally Painter made 3 of 4 free throws in the final quarter and scored 11.
Emma Copeland added 8 in the championship game.
Copeland poured in 17 points in the Lady Eagles’ 36-31 victory over Class A’s 17th-ranked Mooreland in the semifinals.
She scored 11 of those in the second quarter when Hennessey outscored Mooreland 17-6 to turn a six-point deficit into a fivepoint halftime lead.
The teams played to a stalemate in the second half.
Copeland was eventually named the tournament’s MVP.
She scored 13 points in the team’s 49-26 victory against South Central (Kan.) in the quarterfinal.
The Lady Eagles got off to a hot start and led 36-10 at the half.
Star Torres scored all 11 of her points in the half, including a trio of treys.
Copeland also made three 3-pointers in the half.
Munroe added 10.
Eagles go 1-2 at tournament
Beau Vinson and Hagen Copeland earned spots on the all-tournament team as the Hennessey boys placed fourth in the Holiday Classic in Mooreland.
Vinson averaged 19.3 points a game over the three days, including 27 in Saturday’s 59-50 loss to Mooreland in the third place game.
However, he was the lone Eagle to reach double figures as the host Bearcats outscored Hennessey in each of the first three quarters.
The Eagles were down 12 entering the fourth and Vinson poured in 11 in the final frame, but the Eagles couldn’t close the gap.
Brytan Gardner and Ryker Painter each scored 7 in the loss.
Hennessey was sent to the third-place game by Waukomis as the Chiefs prevailed 71-36 in Friday’s semifinal.
The Chiefs had big advantages in each the first, second and fourth quarters.
Copeland made three treys in the first half when he scored 11 of his 13 points.
Vinson scored 11. That duo combined for 37 in Hennessey’s 71-44 win against Fargo-Gage/Ft. Supply on Thursday.
It was a two-point game after a quarter, but Hennessey started to pull away with an 18-6 run in the second.
Copeland and Vinson combined for 10 of those points.
Vinson led all scorers with 20 while Copeland added 17.
Freddy Meraz made it three in double figures with his 11 points.
