Lady Jackets dominant in first meet
After a one-year hiatus, Kingfisher is back to being champion of the Sand Plum Invitational cross country meet.
The Lady Jackets opened their 2025 season Saturday by winning the meet in Weatherford in convincing fashion.
KHS had three runners in the top 10 and seven who medaled (top 30) as the team totaled only 49 points.
Host Weatherford was the runner-up with 91. Twelve full teams competed in the meet and 120 runners took part in the high school girls’ race.
Scout Snodgrass led the short-handed Kingfisher pack with a second-place finish.
She ran the 1.5-mile course in 9:07.34.
Cordell’s Calily Walker won the race in 9:02.98.
Addison Price was sixth overall with her time of 9:33.86 while Harper Evans was just two spots back of her in 9:37.99.
Also counting toward Kingfisher’s point total was freshman Hinsley Brodrick, who was 17th overall, but 16th in the team point standings as she finished in 9:50.24.
Junior Mattie Slezickey was one spot behind Brodrick and finished in 9:50.92.
Also earning medals for KHS were Ryan Farrar, who was 24th, and Molly Weber, who placed 28th.
Kingfisher’s scoring runners had an average time of 9:36. Weatherford’s scorers averaged 10:03. Okeene, which took third, averaged 10:29 and scored 133 points.
KHS dominated despite being without Lily Lunsford, who missed the race due to illness.
Lunsford was Kingfisher’s second-best finisher both in 2023 when the Lady Jackets won the team title and last year when they were the runners-up.
Even without Lunsford, coach Stefan Seifried was confident in his team going into the meet.
“I thought Saturday went as planned,” Seifried said. “I was very proud of all the kids.”
Hennessey’s girls placed ninth overall.
They were led by Emma Copeland and Julianne Matousek, both of whom medaled.
Copeland was 10th overall and ninth toward the team point standings with her time of 9:41.64.
Matousek ran the race in 9:48.05, good for 13th (12th).
No county school fielded a full boys team, but there were two medalists in the boys race.
Kingfisher’s Wyatt Long placed 14th in running the two-mile course in 11:30.78.
Seth Sims of Hennessey was 28th with his time of 11:50.99.
