Lady Jackets earn comeback win
Callie Blair used her glove and her legs to help Kingfisher secure its sixth straight win.
None of it was easy. KHS made its home debut Thursday and had to earn a 4-2 come-from-behind win over Chisholm on the opening day of the Highway 33 Classic.
Kingfisher was down 2-1 entering the top of the fifth - and likely its final at-bat in the tournament-shortened game.
Jancee Matthews helped keep the game going by leading off with a single, stealing second and then scoring after Adlee Friesen bunted for a single and drew a throw while advancing to second base.
Friesen attempted to give KHS a lead, but was thrown out at home while trying to score on a sacrifice bunt by Reese Roof.
The Lady Longhorns still had a chance to win it in the bottom half of the frame.
They had runners on the corner with just one out, but Kinlee East coaxed a pop up and then a fly ball to right field.
Blair made the running catch to keep the game going into the sixth.
With two outs and two runners on, Blair hit a grounder to second and her hustle down the line helped force an error.
Shelby Davis scored on the play to put KHS up 3-2.
Jancee Matthews also reached on an error, allowing another run to score.
East closed the game out in the bottom half of the frame to earn the win in the circle. Blair caught the final out in right field.
The junior pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, gave up three hits and struck out three without surrendering a run.
She came on in relief of Kynlee Brunson, who allowed three hits and two runs over 2 2/3 innings.
KHS struck first as East’s single brought home Kendall Farrar in the top of the first inning.
However, Kingfisher spent much of the next three innings making solid contact, but hitting it directly to Chisholm defenders.
The Lady Longhorns were able to break through with a pair of runs in the third.
East entered with two outs, but needed just one pitch to force a groundout and limit the damage.
East was 2 for 3 at the plate to go with her RBI.
Liliana Garramone was also 2 for 3. Her two-out single kept the inning alive before Blair reached on an error on the play that gave KHS the lead.
Kingfisher played Watonga and Edmond North on Friday (after press time of this edition) to wrap up pool play in the tournament.
Saturday’s time will depend on the results of all the pool play games.
