Lady Jackets win 2 of 3, take 3rd at Dale
The game was in danger of getting away from Kingfi sher.
Though they eventually lost, the Lady Jackets didn’t let Washington off easy.
Class 3A’s defending champ and top-ranked Lady Warriors held off KHS 4637 in the semifinals of the Boomarang Classic in Dale last Friday.
The Lady Jackets bounced back on Saturday to defeat Alva - 3A’s thirdranked team - in convincing fashion, 59-38, to claim third place in the tournament.
“I was proud of how they responded and competed the whole weekend,” said coach Taylor Young.
With 2:37 left in the second quarter, KHS trailed Washington 29-12 and appeared in real trouble of being blown out.
After a timeout, Kingfi sher closed the half on an 8-0 run, then scored the first four points of the second half.
All told, KHS held the high-powered Washington offense (the Lady Warriors scored 100 points in their quarterfinal game and 69 points in the final) scoreless for nearly 6 minutes.
Kelby Beller’s bucket put an end to the drought at 4:42, but Abbie Myers got KHS within 31-27 on a putback with 2:17 to go in the quarter.
That’s as close as Kingfi sher got.
Beller ended the third with a 3-pointer for a ninepoint lead and KHS only got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter.
Bentli Brantley came off the bench to lead Washington with 15 while Beller scored 12.
Myers led Kingfisher with 10 and Reese Roof scored 7.
Alva played eventual champ Dale extremely tough before bowing out in the semifinals, but proved not able to hold up to the Lady Jackets on the tournament’s third day.
Mattie Slezickey’s seven points helped KHS out to a 13-12 lead, but Kingfisher took over in the second with a 20-5 run.
A good bit of damage was done at the foul line as KHS went 12 of 14 in the quarter.
The second half was either free throws or 3-pointers.
KHS made five from beyond the arc as it continued to extend its lead.
Three came from Roof and then one each by Slezickey and Kendall Farrar.
Slezickey led the Lady Jackets with 15 points.
Myers and Roof poured in 12 apiece while Ela Hartman scored 10.
Hartman had 15 in Kingfi sher’s 75-42 victory over Oklahoma Christian School in the quarterfinals.
Kingfisher led 28-4 after a quarter and 48-12 at the half.
Myers had 10 of her 18 in the first quarter while Roof made three 3-pointers as part of her 16 points.
Kingfisher is 4-2 on the season. Four games have come against teams ranked in the top-five of their respective class.
The month will end with a three-day run at the prestigious - and equally tough - Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic in Ada.
“We are learning and getting better each game, which is nice to see with such a tough December schedule,” Young said.
