Lomega district title sets up historic coach matchup at regional
Only two people have won more girls basketball state championships than Rick Wilson.
He faced off against one of them on Tuesday night.
That’s when Taloga visited top-ranked Lomega (after press time) in a Class B-II regional semifinal.
The legendary Wilson has won seven state titles as a coach at five different schools and is tied with Seiling’s Brady Hamar for second-most all time.
Two coaches have won eight: Bertha Frank Teague and Lomega’s Kevin Lewallen.
Lewallen has the better odds to add to his total as he guides the Lady Raiders through these playoffs.
They pushed their record to 24-1 with their 12th straight win on Friday by demolishing Carney 93-9 in a home district championship game.
The Lady Raiders led 41-5 after a quarter and 61-5 at the half.
Reagan Snowden had 17 points to lead 12 different Lady Raiders to score.
She scored 10 in the first quarter and 13 in the first half.
Paige Wheeler had 9 in the first quarter and scored 15 for the game.
Aliana Lawson also scored 9 in the opening frame and finished with 13.
Hadlee Ott, Bree Yost, Jackie Penaran and Kyndall Ramer all scored 8 points for the Lady Raiders.
Wilson’s Taloga squad beat Cimarron 87-31 in a district championship.
The Lady Panthers enter the game with a 13-10 record.
He last won a state championship in 2007 at Weatherford. His first title was 1985 at Elk City.
Wilson also won two titles with Seiling, one with Carl Albert and two at Hydro- Eakly.
The year Wilson won his most recent state championship was the first year for Lewallen to guide Lomega to a title. The Lady Raiders’ crown in 2024 allowed Lewallen to surpass Wilson and join Teague atop the all-time list for state titles among girls’ coaches.
Raiders dominate Carney for district championship Breckon Murray nailed half of Lomega’s 10 3-pointers as the Raiders dominated Carney 65-47 at home last Friday in a Class B-II district championship.
The game wasn’t even as close as the final score might indicate as the Raiders built up a 31-point lead through three quarters before throwing it into cruise control.
They cruised into this week’s regional tournament.
The 16th-ranked Raiders improved to 16-9 and hosted No. 19 Cimarron in a regional semifinal Tuesday night (after press time).
The remainders of the regional will be played in Dover.
Jaxson Snowden did a lot of the early heavy lifting as he scored 9 in the first quarter when Lomega built a 17-9 lead.
Murray heated up in the second.
He made two treys and scored 8 as Lomega went on a 22-11 run.
Murray knocked down three more 3-pointers in the third as the Raiders outscored Carney 24-12.
He finished his night with 17 points.
Snowden scored 13 while Lance Yost chipped in 12.
Yost and Traevon Smith-Dunn each made two treys. The latter scored 8 in the game.
Cimarron beat Taloga 82-28 in its district title game.
The Lomega-Cimarron winner plays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Dover for the regional title while the loser moves into Friday’s consolation bracket.
