Longhorns sweep district

By

It wasn’t exactly the way Dylan Blundell planned it, but the Dover baseball coach isn’t going to turn down a district championship.

The Longhorns swept Cimarron 13-1 and 14-4 Thursday at home to earn a Class B district title and advance to this week’s regional.

The district was originally set to include No. 10 Hammon and be played on the Warriors’ home field.

However, Hammon recently had a player test positive for COVID-19 and had to quarantine seven other players, forcing them to drop out of the district.

“It’s not the way we wanted to win, especially since I thought we had a good chance to beat them,” Blundell said.

That turned it into a two-way district with Cimarron, over which Dover had multiple wins this season.

The opener was close as Dover inched its way to a 3-1 lead after four innings before erupting for 11 runs over the next two to win in six.

Joriaun Caldwell, Eduardo Gamez and Orlando Lozano drove in two runs apiece.

Trinton Ritz and Damion Turner both scored three times and drove in a run each.

Emory Norton and Lance Dunigan had two runs apiece while Kason Harviston had an RBI and run scored.

Turned allowed just four hits and no earned runs against the Blazers.

He struck out 12 batters in picking up the victory.

Harviston and Gamez combined to allow only one hit in the four-inning win to seal the district.

Harviston threw 2 1/3 innings, surrendered one hit and an unearned run and earned the win.

He struck out five.

Gamez didn’t give up a hit in his 1 2/3 innings.

Dover posted five runs in the first and added seven more in the third.

Turner and Valles drove in two apiece.

Ritz scored three times while Caldwell, Norton and Dunigan scored twice each.

Dover enters the regional with a 12-10 record. The Longhorns were just 3-14 last fall, Blundell’s first as a head coach.

“We’ve turned the corner a little bit,” he said. “I’m happy for our guys.”

Okarche kept its season alive with a win Thursday.

The Warriors knocked off Binger-Oney 10-8 in their Class A district opener at Fort Cobb.

The second-ranked host team then defeated Okarche 18-2 later in the day.

Fort Cobb also beat Binger-Oney 15-0, which eliminated the Bobcats.

Okarche played Fort Cobb on Friday after press time. A loss would eliminate the Warriors from the playoffs whereas a win would force a deciding game against the Mustangs.
