Making History in the New House
One day, when it has served its time, they’ll write the book on the history of state basketball at the OG&E Coliseum.
And its beginnings will have a lot of Kingfisher County.
The new facility that replaced State Fair Arena - also known as “The Big House” - was christened on Tuesday morning as it became the home of high school basketball state tournaments.
The very first state tournament game played there?
It featured the Lady Raiders of Lomega taking on Arnett.
The first win? That goes to Lomega, too. The first point? A free throw by Lomega’s Reagan Snowden.
The first bucket? Paige Wheeler of Lomega.
(Editor’s note: For more on Lomega’s quarterfinal win, see our March 4 edition.)
After girls finished up the first session, it was time for Class B-II boys.
The first boys game? The Dover Longhorns against Granite (coached by Okarche alum Kol Bomhoff).
The first bucket belonged to the Longhorns’ Daxx Compton.
Dover got the first victory for a boys team.
You get the gist. All in all, it was a great start for county teams at the 2026 small-school extravaganza.
Kingfisher County sent four teams to the first weekend of state: The Dover boys and Lomega girls in B-II and both Okarche teams in Class A.
All four won quarterfinal games and played in semifinals on Friday.
(Note: For more on those quarterfinal wins, see Page 6 of this edition.)
Who will win the first state championships in the new coliseum? Time will tell this weekend, but chances are when that history of this building is written, you’re going to read even more about Kingfi sher County.
