Madelyn McCabe won two gold medals as Cashion officially began its defense of the Class 2A girls track and field championships last weekend.

McCabe, one of the top junior track and field prospects in the state, won both the high jump and long jump March 15 at the Steve Hickman Invitational at Cherokee.

She won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7.75 inches and then cleared 5-6 in the high jump.

She was also a part of Cashion’s third-place 400 meter relay team along with Lauren Lamb, Bella Woody and Bella Schenk.

Cashion finished third in the girls’ team standings with 69 points. Watonga won the meet with 121.5, edging Chisholm’s 119 points.

Hennessey’s Madison Collier entered the meet with a lot of hype in the throwing events and lived up to it.

The sophomore won both the discus and the shot put, beating Cashion’s Tatum Robertson in both.

Collier was recently rated the nation’s top sophomore in the shot put and she won the Cherokee meet with a heave of 38 feet, 9.5 inches. Robertson was second with 33-6.

Collier also claimed gold in the discus with a throw of 140-6. Robertson’s runner-up throw cleared 98-7.

Collier scored all of Hennessey’s 20 points, which placed the team eighth.

Lomega’s girls were 15th with 11 points while the LHS boys took 19th place with seven points.
