Mueggenborg adds another milestone
Okarche senior surpasses 2,000-point career scoring mark during Warrior win
Add another big milestone to Jett Mueggenborg’s unending list of accomplishments.
The Okarche senior poured in 22 points in less than two full quarters of action Saturday as the Warriors out-classed visiting Burns Flat-Dill City 99-26.
His second-to-last bucket of the game - Mueggenborg’s 19th and 20th points - were especially significant, however.
That shot put Mueggenborg over the 2,000-point total for his career.
For a two-time state champ and state tournament MVP, three-time conference player of the year winner and multiple other honors, even this is rarified air.
According to iwasatthegame. com, only 146 boys basketball players in Oklahoma high school history had surpassed 2,000 career points before Mueggenborg.
“It’s a tremendous honor for Jett,” said head coach Aaron West after the game. “He’s a natural scorer, but has put in a lot of time on his game to be able to score like that.”
Mueggenborg’s got all the tools in his arsenal.
He can draw the foul, finish at the rim or pull up and hit the medium-range jump shot.
There’s also the 3-pointer.
All of it was on display against the Eagles as Mueggenborg scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Warriors plastered 43 points on the scoreboard to take a 34-point lead.
He added 11 more in the second quarter as the advantage grew to 78-14.
“He’s still an unselfish player who puts winning over anything,” said West.
Mueggenborg added six rebounds and an assist.
He didn’t see the court in the second half, nor did any other Warriors starter.
“I’m very proud of him,” West said. “Not a lot of players in state history have gone over 2,000 points, especially this early in their senior season.
“He’s a special player and it’s a joy to coach him.”
Easton Roby took advantage of his brief minutes to score 14 points and also grab six rebounds while leading the team with four assists.
Ethan Kirby poured in 13 points and made a trio of 3-pointers.
The second half provided opportunities for others.
Among those taking advantage was sophomore Court Sumrall.
He picked up the Okarche scoring slack with 13 third-quarter points.
That included a trio of 3-pointers.
He made four overall and Okarche made 13 as a team - for his 18 total points. Sumrall also led the team with nine rebounds.
The win was Okarche’s second in as many nights.
The Warriors downed Geary 92-23 at home on Friday.
Mueggenborg led a trio of Warriors in double figures with 19 points.
Kirby joined him in making three 3-pointers and finished with 14.
Roby scored 10 points and led the team with 14 rebounds and five assists.
The Warriors enter the Thanksgiving break with a 3-0 record. They’ll play at Coyle on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Lady Warriors earn back-to-back wins
Okarche had to wait a full week to try to get rid of the taste of a season-opening loss to Lomega.
Then the Lady Warriors got two games in as many days to work on it.
Okarche easily handled Geary 64-19 on Friday, then turned around Saturday to pull away from Burns Flat-Dill City 59-29.
Now off for the Thanksgiving break, Okarche will play at Coyle on Dec. 2 with a 2-1 record.
Friday night’s game was over almost before it started as Okarche outscored Geary 24-0 in the first quarter.
The Lady Warriors cruised the rest of the night.
Katie Parham and Logan White did a bulk of the scoring damage with 18 points apiece.
Parham made four 3-pointers as part of her total while White did her work inside with nine field goals. She also had five rebounds, all on the offensive end.
The Lady Warriors had 20 second-chance points thanks to 19 offensive boards overall.
Ally Baustert added six points for the Lady Warriors while Lawson Geheb scored five.
The Lady Eagles on Saturday put up more resistance, but Okarche dominated the third quarter to put the game away.
Okarche was only up by five points after a quarter and 13 at the break.
The Lady Warriors doubled the margin with a 17-4 run in the third quarter.
The scoring again fell to White and Parham.
White led all scorers with 21.
Parham chipped in 17 and led the team with eight boards and six assists.
Callie Cramer scored eight and added seven rebounds.
Okarche forced 30 turnovers in the game and scored 29 points off those miscues.
